Fortnite Introduces Tactical FPS Mode "Ballistic" Inspired by Counter-Strike

Post by katharine »

Epic Games is taking Fortnite in a new direction with the release of "Ballistic," a first-person shooter mode reminiscent of Counter-Strike and Valorant. The mode is designed to showcase the potential of first-person experiences within Fortnite, as the game expands its creative offerings to match platforms like Roblox.

Ballistic is a 5v5, round-based competitive mode where strategy and teamwork are critical. Players are divided into two teams: one tasked with planting a "Rift Point Device" (similar to a bomb in Counter-Strike), while the other team must prevent this from happening. After six rounds, the teams switch sides, and the first to win seven rounds claims victory. Between rounds, players can purchase gear to improve their chances of success, adding an additional layer of strategy.

Epic’s blog describes the mode as “adrenaline-filled” and highlights the importance of tactical coordination and individual skill. Ballistic aims to offer players an alternative gaming experience within Fortnite while preserving the game’s core mechanics and appeal.

This isn't the first time Epic has introduced modes inspired by other games. Features like its racing and festival modes borrow from Rocket League and Rock Band (both owned by Epic), while the Lego survival mode bears a resemblance to Minecraft. Even Fortnite’s main battle royale mode was a pivot inspired by the success of PUBG. Epic has embraced these adaptations to expand Fortnite into a platform that offers diverse experiences.

The launch of Ballistic is part of Epic’s strategy to position Fortnite as a creative hub similar to Roblox. By allowing creators to develop first-person experiences, Epic encourages players to explore varied content without abandoning the game's iconic battle royale. With outfits and gear working across all modes, players also retain value from their purchases, providing financial incentives for Epic to continually expand the game.

Ballistic enters early access on December 11th, coinciding with the launch of first-person tools for Fortnite creators. This new mode comes at a busy time for Fortnite, with the game’s Japanese-themed season recently debuting and the permanent version of its throwback OG mode launching last Friday.
